Personal Profile - James Mitchell

I'm James Mitchell, and here's a little about me. I've had a successful career in pest control working for a global industry leader from 2019-2021. I started as a technician in London, progressing towards becoming a Field Biologist in early 2021. I moved to another company in late 2021, working solely for supermarkets until March 2023. Then I decided to setup Mitchell Environmental Solutions. I want to branch out my career, focusing on pest control with good practice, helping customers sustain pest free environments whilst encouraging natural, beneficial wildlife to increase local biodiversity.

Early in my pest control career, my enthusiasm for the role developed and my academic background helped me learn the technical aspects, quickly becoming a trainer for new technicians. I helped fellow technicians solve established infestations by giving technical advice and investigating premises alongside them to determine the root cause of infestations. Moving into higher risk & complex customers (such as food processing & manufacturing industry), I gained valuable knowledge and experience, working together with customers and stakeholders to ideally prevent, but inevitably solve any pest problems. After passing some robust audits, I was promoted to the Field Biologist role which I had been aspiring. I thoroughly enjoyed the intensive training and worked successfully in the role.

Despite enjoying the Biologist role, I decided to take a technician role at another company, offering less travel & more money. This role involved working solely for supermarkets, which have their own challenges. My previous role equipped me with experience and knowledge, so I adapted to the new role and comfortably managed my stores, building great relationships with store managers, staff and fellow colleagues from other trade disciplines to ensure problems were solved quickly and efficiently.

After nearly 18 months, I decided I needed a more challenging role and contemplated a new career or starting pest control on my own. I missed the diversity of pest problems I faced, and the satisfaction gained from solving those issues. After a few months, I decided to take the risk and go alone in pest control.

I'm focusing on providing "greener" pest control by trying to minimise my environmental impact, and hence customers' environmental impacts. This involves:

  • Minimising the use of toxic bait to reduce environmental impacts through responsible pest control methods and effective, robust pest prevention solutions.

  • Sourcing products produced in the UK to reduce travel miles of shipments, which also helps the UK economy.

  • Working locally to reduce emissions emitted by vehicles.
